“Receive the children in reverence, educate them in love, and send them forth in freedom.”   -Rudolf Steiner

The Saltwater School is an independent school initiative formed by a group of parents (including a Waldorf teacher) who want to bring a holistic education to their children and children in the Comox Valley.  The group has formed a Board of Trustees that is divided into Committees to work on various aspects of bringing the school to life.  Click here to view our Mission Statement.

Here is some more information about who we are:

Rebecca Watkin was born in London, England and immigrated to Canada in the late 70s. She grew up in Alberta but felt drawn to the west after high school. Rebecca moved to Vancouver and earned her Bachelor degree in English from Simon Fraser University. In her search for teacher training Rebecca stumbled upon Waldorf and was hooked. She moved to Toronto at age 28 and studied to become a Waldorf teacher at the Rudolf Steiner Centre. During that year she met her husband and when teacher training ended they moved west together.

Rebecca spent her first three years of teaching at the Vancouver Waldorf School. Here she was mentored by many talented and experienced teachers. After three years Rebecca took three years off of teaching to produce two beautiful girls who are very Waldorf. She returned to teaching two years ago at Morning Glory Waldorf School in Qualicum Beach. She will end her commitment to Morning Glory at the end of June 2010.

Rebecca began blogging about beginning a Waldorf School in the Comox Valley over a year ago. She is very pleased that her dream will become a reality in September 2010.

Michelle Nagle grew up in Vancouver and attended the Vancouver Waldorf School in North Vancouver from Grades Four through Twelve.  She then continued on to complete her BA in Anthropology at the University of Victoria.  The mother of three daughters- ages 6, 3 and newborn- she shares her love of learning with them and wants to provide a holistic education for her children.

Michelle has led a children’s singing group and coordinates various children’s events.  She enjoys a wide variety of outdoor activities and celebrating the cycle of the year through festivals.

As co-founder and current board member of the Saltwater School, Michelle brings her organizational skills,  creativity and enthusiasm to the group.  She is looking forward to co-creating a school community with other interested families.

Kendra Quince was born in Victoria and lived in Regina, Edmonton, Toronto, Jasper, and Guelph before settling in the Comox Valley seven years ago to start a family. She has a degree in English from the University of Guelph, and is currently completing her Waldorf Kindergarten Teacher Training at the West Coast Institute of Anthroposophy.

Kendra loves reading, traveling, exploring the outdoors and camping with her two children, pets, and partner. She is excited to be part of the movement to bring Waldorf to Courtenay for her family, friends, and community :) Kendra currently practices Waldorf philosophies in her home with children and is studying the Kindergarten classroom under the mentorship of Ruth Kerr, the Kindergarten Teacher of Duncan’s Sunrise Waldorf School.

Michael Vincent was born and raised in Toronto.  He moved to BC in the early 90’s and began a career in the film industry. 15 years later he gave up film to be a full time father, following the birth of his son.  “I am committed to support the opening of the Saltwater School  in the Comox Valley. Not only for my wonderful little boy, but for all of the children who live in the area.  I believe it is an outstanding option for them.”

He brings his business sense and computer knowledge to the group.

Our school is located in the Comox Valley, nestled between the mountains and sea.

The Comox Valley is an outdoor mecca, with many recreational activities such as skiing, mountain biking, sailing and kayaking at our doorstep.  There are many hiking trails and beaches to explore, and special places to be in the natural world.  Our community also has a strong arts and culture movement with great variety in music, drama and visual arts.  Local farms provide a variety of fresh food staples for people in the Comox Valley, many of which are available at our local stores and Farmer’s Market.
